Zuckerman Spaeder Partner William J. Murphy Named to The Daily Record's Criminal Law Power List
Zuckerman Spaeder is pleased to announce that The Daily Record has named Baltimore-based partner William J. Murphy to its 2022 Criminal Law Power List. The list recognizes professionals at the top of the criminal law profession across Maryland.
Mr. Murphy is an experienced trial lawyer who has tried civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts, represented clients in commercial arbitration, and argued appeals in courts around the country. Throughout his career, he has represented witnesses and targets of grand jury investigations, defended clients being investigated by federal enforcement agencies, and represented individuals in congressional investigations. His high-profile defense work has included helping lead the trial team that obtained an acquittal of former White House Counsel Gregory Craig in a 2019 federal false statements case.
Asked to describe one aspect of the legal profession he would most like to change, Mr. Murphy told The Daily Record, “[t]he profession continues to benefit from increased gender and ethnic diversity of lawyers, but I would like to continue creating pathways for those women and people of color in private practice to achieve partnership and to advance within the profession. I would like to see more efforts by the organized bar in promoting the training and development of young lawyers to fulfill their potential.”
For two decades, Mr. Murphy has been an active participant in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is currently the President-Elect and previously served as chair of the organization’s Maryland State Committee. He also served a four-year term on the College’s board of regents, where he represented Maryland and the District of Columbia. Mr. Murphy devotes substantial time to volunteer efforts, including as a member of the board of trustees for the Supreme Court Historical Society and as an executive committee member with the College Bound Foundation, where he also served as an honorary co-chair of their Annual Lawyers’ Campaign.
